CIO | Nadine Terman @SolsteinCapital details what she's seeing in global financial markets.

A Hefty Sum

That’s what Kroger is paying out ($1.2bn) to states, local govs, and Native American tribes to settle the majority of claims that it helped fuel the opioid epidemic due to lax oversight of pill sales.

Against The Grain

Walmart cut the starting pay for employees who stock shelves and prep online orders. They had increased pay for these folks back in Mar 2021, when online orders rocketed during the pandemic. Sounds like Walmart and all its data is telling you something. 1. That it doesn’t have to pay these people as much. 2. That is doesn’t want to pay these people as much. Perhaps all the ships stuck in the Panama Canal are worrying retailers for this holiday season.

Opposite Reaction

So, when GM offered its largest 4-yr wage increase in decades to the UAW, and they called the offer “insulting”, you have to bet the aforementioned reduced-salary Walmart employees wouldn’t find an offer for a 10% wage increase for union-repped workers and a 56% increase in wages for newer workers insulting…maybe not what you asked for, but not insulting.

Pocket Change

Former FTX exec Salame has to forfeit $1.5bn with a “b” when pleading guilty to 2 counts: federal campaign finance and money-transmitting crimes. He was supporting candidates with Alameda Research money. It makes you wonder whether the $1.5bn is pocket change to this guy, or the whole enchilada.

Not Cool

OK, Elon. It’s one thing to rip apart Twitter. It’s another thing to turn off Starlink during Ukraine’s attack on Russia. Seems a bit un-American.

Oil Up, Dollar Up

Nuff said. Trend shown below. Because the US exports more oil and gas than it imports, and their px are up, the dollar benefits.

Bad Behavior

You’ve read the stories. Crazy people on airlines. (I couldn’t manage to read the recent one about the bodily fluids causing the plane to land.) Crazy people in parks. Today’s story for BBG covers the high quit ratio of retail workers, in part due to the crime, high expectations, and bad behavior of customers.

RHOIN

Akin to a Real Housewives episode, Xi is a no-show at the G20 summit in India. He’s the first Chinese leader to skip the party since its inception in 2008. To be fair, he’s minimized travel the past few years due to Covid, but it’s definitely a snub
